Princeton University senior Joshua Yang ’25 has received the Gates Cambridge Scholarship, which will cover the full cost of a post graduate degree at the University of Cambridge. He is among 35 U.S. scholars recognized for “outstanding academic achievement” and “social leadership,” according to the prize announcement.
Yang, a philosophy major and a journalism minor, plans to pursue an MPhil in Modern South Asian Studies at Cambridge in preparation for a career as a journalist.
He has published articles in Foreign Policy, The Nation, the LA Review of Books, and other major media outlets. His reporting work has taken him to New Delhi, Oxford, Hong Kong, and to Berlin, for the journalism course “International News: Migration Reporting.”
“Joshua’s determination to report on social justice issues is particularly noteworthy,” said Deborah Amos (Journalism), in a story on the University homepage. “During our trip to Berlin, he managed to gain access to a Ukrainian refugee center at the former Tempelhof airport. His reporting included not only compelling interviews but also a personal touch, with a memorable meal shared with a family eager to tell their story.”
In an interview with The Daily Princetonian, Yang details the importance of his experience in the classroom at Princeton, including his first journalism course, “The Literature of Fact: The World and the City,” taught by Fall 2022 Visiting Ferris Professor Kushanava Choudhury.
At Princeton, Yang has served as associate editor of The Daily Princetonian and contributing editor for The Nassau Weekly. This summer, he will cover foreign breaking news as an intern at the international desk of The Washington Post.
