The Humanities Council’s Program in Journalism is pleased to announce summer opportunities for undergraduate students interested in nonfiction writing, publishing, and reporting. Students can learn more on the program’s website and apply through the Student Activities Funding Engine (SAFE).

All first-year students, sophomores, and juniors who have completed at least one journalism course at Princeton may apply. Requests from students in the journalism minor will be prioritized.

Ferris Summer Opportunities for Student Internships in Journalism: These internships, which satisfy the journalism practice (fieldwork) requirement for journalism minors, support students as they gain experience in print or digital media in Summer 2025.

  • New Jersey-based non-profit internships: This summer the Program in Journalism is partnering with two New Jersey-based non-profit news organizations to offer six-week research and reporting opportunities with the N.J. State House News Service and the Crimes Against Democracy Podcast.
  • Student-initiated summer internships: The program will also consider funding requests for up to $3,000 for expenses associated with a summer internship in journalism, publishing, or editing. Internships must take place in a recognized organization, in either print or digital media, for six to eight weeks.

John McPhee ’53 Awards for Summer Projects in Independent Journalism: These awards recognize promising student journalists and help underwrite the cost of long-form, nonfiction writing projects of at least six weeks in duration. The program will consider funding requests for up to $3,000 for expenses associated with a proposed independent project. The project will satisfy the journalism practice (independent writing project) requirement for journalism minors.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Students are encouraged to apply early for full consideration; the final deadline to apply is May 31, 2025.
