Keith Richburg, a member of The Washington Post Editorial Board and a Post Global Opinions columnist, is director of the Journalism and Media Studies Centre at the University of Hong Kong. He spent more than 20 years overseas as the Post’s bureau chief in Beijing, Hong Kong, Nairobi and Manila. As New York bureau chief, he covered the 2008 presidential campaign and covered his first U.S. presidential campaign in 1980. He is the author of “Out of America: A Black Man Confronts Africa.”
