Audio Journalism: Storytelling for Radio Documentaries and Podcasts

Joe K. Richman

Back to "Fall 2017" courses

This seminar will focus on journalism in the form of audio storytelling, as a good radio story can do much more than just convey information. We will explore the sensibilities and skills needed for narrative storytelling to capture listeners’ imaginations. Students will do advanced writing, interviewing, sound-gathering, and multi-layered audio production to create broadcast-caliber radio documentaries. Students will produce an audio postcard, a profile, and a final documentary–through frequent rewrites and intensive editing–and a class podcast of their work. The best stories will be pitched to WYNC, NPR, and other outlets.
