Student Mentorship Program

The Program in Journalism offers a mentorship program that connects current and former Ferris Visiting Professors in Journalism with University students pursuing the minor in Journalism. The new program aims to connect journalism students with practitioners who serve as mentors, and facilitate an exchange of knowledge, experience, and professional skills. During the semester, students spend three hours per week working with their mentors, conducting research, and supporting various projects, including international reporting, narrative nonfiction book writing, the business of journalism, and audio journalism. In addition, students have meetings dedicated to discussing and advancing their academic and professional goals, in conversation with their mentors, who offer writing feedback and career advice.

Mentors have experience in a range of media and nonprofit organizations, including NPR, TIME, The Washington Post, TheWrap, BBC, the Bureau for International Reporting, and more. The mentorship program began in Spring 2026, pairing fourteen students with mentors.

Students pursuing the minor in journalism can apply for the Student Mentorship Program by April 15, 2026.
