This seminar will focus on how the evolution of media and technology has shaped the way America looks at race and enabled the creation of social movements, like #BlackLivesMatter and the alt-right, that in turn shape national policy agendas. The course will explore how the democratization of media allows people to lead the conversation, and how legacy media have changed their tactics to engage directly with audiences in the age of Twitter. Students will learn about non-traditional forms of reporting as they cover issues including diversity, racial demographics, bias, cultural appropriation, and race in the 2016 presidential election.
