The Humanities Council’s Program in Journalism will support 35 students pursuing internships and projects this summer. Students will sharpen their skills in reporting, audio storytelling, fact-checking, and nonfiction writing as they work alongside experienced professionals and contribute meaningfully to local, national, and global news outlets.
In addition to ongoing partnerships with local non-profit organizations, the Program in Journalism offered several new opportunities for students to engage with traditional and new media. New opportunities this year include a pilot program at the Mpala Research Centre in Kenya, a reporting fellowship at McCarter Theatre Center, and an editorial internship at a new print magazine focused on global reporting. With funding from the program, undergraduate journalism minors will also pursue their own summer reporting projects.
“The work of these young journalists is critical to the field,” said Eliza Griswold, director of the Program in Journalism and a professor of the practice. “We look forward to hearing what they learn after a summer of intensive on the ground reporting.”
New Jersey-based Non-profit Internship Initiative
Six journalism minors will intern with local, New Jersey-based non-profit organizations, as part of an ongoing initiative with the Program in Journalism.
Lucy Harper ’28, Miniya Malone ’29, and Devon Williams ’28 will intern at the NJ State House News Service, where they will cover a range of news events, political campaigns, and legislative hearings. They will work with professional editors to develop new stories, and gain insight into policy and politics as they report from the capital.
In partnership with The Jersey Vindicator, Lillian Paterson ’28 and Livia Shneider ’28 will work alongside editors and photojournalists to produce stories that matter to New Jersey residents, including reporting on projects related to healthcare, housing, immigration, the environment, long-term care, transportation, criminal justice, or state government.
New this year, Kenneth Simmons ’27 will be the Reporter-in-Residence at McCarter Theatre. He will pitch stories and report on McCarter’s programming, while also gaining exposure to the theater’s operations through collaborations with McCarter leadership and networking.
JRN x MPALA Pilot Program
Recent graduate Uma Fox ’26 will serve as the inaugural intern for the JRN x MPALA pilot program, an ongoing oral history initiative in which journalism students will document the voices and stories of key figures in the Mpala Research Centre’s history and community. Working with Ferris Professor Andrea Bernstein, a longtime public radio journalist, Fox will conduct interviews with key stakeholders in the United States and in Kenya.
New Internship Partners
Frances Brogan ’27 and Lola Horowitz ’28 will work as editorial interns at Now Voyager, a new bi-monthly print magazine of international reporting, longform writing, photography, and art. Brogan and Horowitz will fact-check and proofread essays and articles for the publication’s fourth issue, and they will have opportunities to pitch stories of their own.
As a student intern for TAPinto Princeton Community News, Devon Rudolph ’28 will report, write, and manage a portion of the daily content posted to the hyperlocal, digital news site. Rudolph will cover topics affecting the Princeton community, including housing, public schools, and infrastructure.
