The sports industry is made up of several publicly subsidized, self-regulating bodies; each has near-complete control over its sector. The lack of competition and government oversight has left room for widespread abuse of every kind: racial, sexual, financial, human rights. The work of uncovering this abuse is often left to investigative sports journalists who in recent years have exposed the NFL’s cover-up of concussion data, the sexual abuse of gymnasts, and the deaths of migrant workers building FIFA’s World Cup, to name a few. In this course, we’ll learn the skills of investigative reporting through the prism of sports.
